Data Should Work for You: Why the CFO is Key to AI Success
Founded in 2015 by Nico Huybrechts, the Belgian consultancy Datashift has grown into a powerhouse of 180+ experts dedicated to turning raw data into strategic assets. In a recent interview, Huybrechts shared his vision on the evolving tech landscape, emphasizing that while AI is the future, its success depends entirely on the person holding the purse strings: the CFO.
The CFO as the Strategic Navigator
Traditionally seen as "scorekeepers," CFOs are now emerging as the indispensable link in AI implementation. Huybrechts points out that predictive models and cash flow analyses are only as reliable as the data feeding them. Because CFOs understand the business's "pain points" and oversee cross-departmental scalability, they are best positioned to ensure AI tools deliver actual value.
- Beyond Support: The modern CFO acts as a "navigator," using AI for scenario planning and rapid risk detection.
- A History of Innovation: CFOs have been leading data collection efforts for decades; AI is simply the next step in becoming a true sparring partner for the CTO.
Avoiding the "Black Box" Pitfall
Despite the potential, Huybrechts warns that AI is not a magic wand. He identifies two primary risks:
- Data Quality: "Bad data leads to bad results." Successful AI requires a multidisciplinary approach involving data quality experts and strategy consultants.
- Lack of Transparency: Many AI models operate as a "black box," offering predictions without explanation. Huybrechts stresses the need for "AI-savvy" staff who can interpret and validate these outcomes.
The Path Forward
To bridge the gap, leadership must treat AI as a collaborative effort rather than a siloed IT project. Huybrechts argues that companies must give their CFOs the time and resources, through training or external partnerships, to become tech-literate strategists.
"AI plays a vital role for finance, but the reverse is equally true. Companies must allow CFOs to take a steering role now to be ready for what’s coming."
